Brief Description of Event:
National periodontist Day is celebrated every year on the 23rd of February. It is celebrated to commemorate the day when Indian Society of Periodontology (ISP), became a non-profitable society in 1975. To honor this day a theme is decided every year by ISP which is followed by all the dental institutions, across the country, to spread awareness regarding the same. This year’s theme was ‘Say No to Bleeding Gums’.
The Department of Periodontology, Babu Banarsi Das College of Dental Sciences (BBDCODS), organized an event to celebrate the day. The aim was to create awareness regarding the theme, ‘Say No to Bleeding gums’, through knowledgeable and fun activities for undergraduate, postgraduate students and interns. A rangoli was made by undergraduate students in the Department to focus people’s attention towards the celebration.
The day commenced with Slogan Writing Competition conducted for the undergraduates. They were directed to submit creative slogans in lieu with the theme wherein an active participation was seen. The event was judged by Dr. Deepak Umapati, Professor and Head, Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology, BBDCODS and Dr. Garima Aggarwal, Reader, Department of Prosthodontics and Crown and Bridge, BBDCODS. Simultaneously, in the Postgraduate section of the Department, a competition for the best PG cubicle was conducted. It was judged by Dr. Tripti Tikku, Professor, Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedic, BBDCODS and Dr. Neerja Singh, Professor, Department of Pediatrics and Preventive Dentistry, BBDCODS. The competition was assessed on the parameters of cleanliness, presentation and beautification of the cubicle. The PGs participated with full enthusiasm and zeal.
Furthermore, a reel making competition was conducted for undergraduate and postgraduate students in accordance with the theme. A short video of 1 minute was to be submitted by the participating teams. The event was judged by Dr. Monika Rathore , Professor and Head, Department of Pediatrics and Preventive Dentistry, BBDCODS and Dr. Priya Singh, Reader, Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology, BBDCODS. The creativity of the participants bedazzled the judges.
A Nukkad Natak was performed by the undergraduate students pertaining to the theme, to make everyone aware of the methods to prevent bleeding gums and maintain oral hygiene. This event was attended by students, faculties of various departments and patients present in the OPD. The presence of our Principal, Dr. Puneet Ahuja, was encouraging and motivating for one and all.
The day culminated with a Quiz Competition organized exclusively for the Interns. 5 teams, named after eminent keywords in Periodontics – Gracey, Chlorhexidine, Carranza, Floss and Scalers, participated with fervor. The quiz was hosted by quiz master Dr. Mohammad Aamir comprising of 5 rounds of questions from various categories.
Finally, the winners of the various competitions were announced by Dr. Mona Sharma, Professor and Head, Department of Periodontology, BBDCODS. The winners and participants were then awarded with the certificates. The day concluded with words of appreciation and encouragement as well as emphasizing on the need for preventing bleeding gums and maintaining oral hygiene.
